What Does pH Balanced Mean?

pH balanced appears on cleansers, shampoos, deodorants, and moisturizers, always as a positive claim. The phrase has a precise meaning in chemistry and a loose meaning in marketing, and knowing both helps you read the label for what it actually promises.

What pH measures

pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that describes how acidic or alkaline a water-based solution is. Seven is neutral. Values below seven are acidic, and values above seven are alkaline. The scale is logarithmic, so each whole step represents a tenfold change in acidity.

Skin sits mildly on the acidic side of neutral. Commonly cited surface values for healthy skin fall between about 4.5 and 5.5, though the exact number varies by body area, age, and individual. The acidic surface is part of how skin maintains its normal condition.
