How to Wash Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
Quick Answer
Wash microfiber cloths separately from lint-producing fabrics, in warm water with a small amount of mild detergent and no fabric softener or bleach. Tumble dry on low or air dry, and never iron them, because heat above roughly 140 F can melt the fibers.

Microfiber works because of very fine synthetic filaments that trap dust, grease and particles in the spaces between them. Two things destroy that ability: heat, and anything that coats the fibers.
Why Microfiber Needs Its Own Rules
The fibers are typically polyester and polyamide, split so fine that a cloth has an enormous surface area for its weight. That surface picks up oil readily, which is why the cloth works without chemicals, and it also picks up whatever you washed it with.
Three common mistakes shorten a cloth's life:
- Washing with cotton towels. Cotton sheds lint, and microfiber grabs it. The cloth comes out of the dryer full of pills and lint.
- Using fabric softener or dryer sheets. Softener is designed to coat fibers. On microfiber, the coating blocks the spaces that do the cleaning.
- Using hot water or high heat. High heat can deform the fine filaments and leave the cloth flat and less absorbent.
The Washing Method
- Sort. Wash microfiber only with other microfiber, or on its own. Keep glass cloths and general-purpose cloths apart if you want to avoid cross-transfer of oils.
- Shake out debris. Knock loose dust and grit into the bin first, so it does not grind into the fabric in the drum.
- Use warm water, not hot, on a normal or gentle cycle.
- Add a small dose of mild liquid detergent. A fraction of the usual amount is enough, because the cloths are not heavily soiled in the way clothing is.
- Skip softener, dryer sheets, bleach and vinegar in the rinse. If the cloths are greasy, a dedicated microfiber detergent or a small amount of degreasing detergent is a better choice than softener.
- Dry on low or hang to dry. Air drying is the safest option if you are unsure of your dryer's lowest setting.
Sorting by Task
A simple color code keeps tasks separate: one color for kitchen and general surfaces, another for bathroom, another for glass and mirrors. Wash each group together, and replace cloths used on high-risk areas such as raw-meat spills after a single use.
When to Retire a Cloth
Microfiber degrades slowly. Signs it is finished: the cloth no longer feels grippy on glass, it leaves streaks after a normal wash, the edges fray into the cleaning surface, or it holds a smell after washing. A cloth used daily typically lasts months rather than years.
Keep the Routine Simple
Wash microfiber separately, warm water, small dose of mild detergent, no softener, low heat. That is the whole method. The cloths will keep grabbing dust and grease instead of pushing it around.
