What the filter catches
Filters trap particles such as wear debris, soot agglomerates, and other contaminants above the media's effective size range. Very small dissolved or chemical contaminants are not removed the same way.
Flow and bypass matter
A filter must balance filtration with oil flow. Many engine systems include a bypass function so oil can continue flowing if the filter is too restricted or oil is very thick during a cold start.
Fit is more than physical size
The correct filter can involve thread, gasket diameter, bypass setting, anti-drainback design, capacity, and media specification.
Change it on schedule
Follow the vehicle manufacturer's oil and filter service interval. A longer-life filter claim does not override the engine maintenance schedule.
Quick checklist
Use the product label, manufacturer directions, and the specific requirements of your situation. Compare the complete product or system rather than making a decision from one marketing phrase, ingredient, or number.
