What an Extract Is
An extract is made by taking plant material - leaves, flowers, roots, seeds - and drawing its soluble compounds into a solvent:
- Extraction: the plant material is soaked or washed in a solvent (commonly water, ethanol, or a mix) that dissolves the compounds of interest.
- Separation: the plant solids are removed, leaving a solution.
- Concentration: the solvent is removed, leaving a concentrated preparation.
- Drying: most supplement extracts are dried into a powder.
The result contains the plant's soluble compounds at a higher concentration than the dried plant itself. An extract is a processing method - it does not change the plant of origin, only how much of it ends up in a given weight.
Standardization
A standardized extract is adjusted so that it contains a specified amount of a particular compound or group of compounds - for example, "standardized to 5% X." This is a manufacturing consistency measure: each batch delivers the same level of the named compound.
What standardization tells you: the extract is consistently adjusted to that compound level. What it does not tell you: anything about outcomes. A consistent ingredient is not a claim about results.
Ratio Terminology
You will also see ratios like 10:1 or 4:1. These describe concentration: a 10:1 extract means, roughly, that 10 parts of plant material were used to produce 1 part of extract. Ratios describe processing intensity, not potency in any clinical sense.
Note the difference between the two systems:
- Standardization names a specific compound and its level.
- A ratio describes how much plant material was concentrated, without naming a compound.
The two can appear together on the same label.
