How to Read Vitamin and Mineral Forms in a Large Supplement Formula

A vitamin or mineral name tells you the nutrient. The source form tells you more about the ingredient used to provide the nutrient. Large formulas often mix many forms on one label.

Vitamin forms

Vitamin B12 might appear as methylcobalamin or another form. Folate might appear as folic acid or 5-MTHF. Vitamin D might appear as D2 or D3.

Mineral forms

Magnesium, zinc, calcium, selenium, and chromium appear in different salts or complexes. The form and the elemental amount are separate pieces of information.

Percent Daily Value

Percent Daily Value helps compare nutrient amounts across products. The number does not tell you everything about suitability for a specific person.

Large formulas need slower reading

Start with serving size. Move through vitamins, minerals, botanicals, fruit ingredients, and other blends. Do not treat the total ingredient count as the main measure of value.
