Quick Answer

A Supplement Facts panel is easier to read when you go in order. Start with serving size, then move through each listed nutrient or ingredient before reading the separate other-ingredients list.

Supplement Facts panel with serving size, amounts, and Daily Value highlighted

A Supplement Facts panel is easier to read when you go in order. Start with serving size, then move through each listed nutrient or ingredient before reading the separate other-ingredients list.

Serving size first

Every amount on the panel is tied to the stated serving. If a serving is two capsules and you take one, you are getting about half of the listed amount unless the product says otherwise.

Amount and Daily Value

Vitamins and minerals often show both an amount and percent Daily Value. Many botanicals and other ingredients have no established Daily Value, so the percentage column can be blank.

Ingredient forms

A nutrient name can be followed by a source form in parentheses. That form can matter for formulation and comparison, but the nutrient amount is still the primary quantity on the panel.

Other ingredients are separate

Capsule shells, flavors, sweeteners, colors, flow agents, and carriers often appear below the panel. They are part of the product even when they are not listed as active dietary ingredients.

Quick checklist

Use the product label, manufacturer directions, and the specific requirements of your situation. Compare the complete product or system rather than making a decision from one marketing phrase, ingredient, or number.
