Engine Oil
API Motor Oil Certification Marks: Donut, Starburst and Shield
Quick Answer
The API Donut shows service category, viscosity grade and whether the oil meets resource-conserving requirements. The API Starburst appears on oils certified for gasoline engines that meet current fuel-economy standards. The API Shield is used for diesel oils and lists the diesel service categories.

Motor oil bottles carry small marks that look decorative and are actually a licensing system. Reading them takes about ten seconds and tells you more than the marketing text on the front.
The Donut
The round API service symbol, usually called the donut, has three parts:
- Top half: the API service category, such as SP for gasoline engines or CK-4 for diesel.
- Center: the SAE viscosity grade, such as 5W-30.
- Bottom half: "Resource Conserving" or "Energy Conserving" when the oil meets the associated fuel-economy and protection requirements.
Letters matter. In gasoline categories, the second letter advances over time: SN, then SP, and so on. An oil meeting a newer category is designed to cover the older one, so SP is backward compatible with SN where the viscosity is allowed. A bottle showing only an obsolete category is not necessarily bad oil, but it is not the current specification.
The Starburst
The Starburst is a certification mark for gasoline engine oils that meet the current ILSAC standard, which includes fuel-economy and engine-protection tests. In practice, an oil with the Starburst and a current API category is what most modern gasoline cars are designed to use.
The Starburst does not appear on every oil. Heavy-duty diesel oils, racing oils and some specialty formulations are licensed differently or not at all.
The Shield
The Shield, or certification mark for diesel, lists diesel service categories such as CK-4 and FA-4. It is the diesel counterpart to the gasoline marks, and it also carries the viscosity grade.
Diesel oils must meet requirements for soot handling, oxidation stability and emissions-system compatibility. Putting a gasoline-only oil in a modern diesel, or the reverse, is a costly mistake.
What the Manual Still Decides
The certification mark tells you the oil meets a category. It does not tell you that the category is the right one for your engine. The owner's manual specifies:
- The required viscosity grade for the expected temperature range.
Follow the manual first, then confirm the bottle carries a matching mark. When the manual names a manufacturer specification, that specification takes priority over a generic API category.
Practical Checks at the Shelf
- Read the viscosity grade in the donut center and match it to the manual.
- Confirm the service category is current, not several generations old.
- Check whether the manual requires a specific manufacturer approval, and look for it on the back label.
- Keep the receipt, since oil is one of the few consumables where a mislabeled product can cause engine damage.
